DAVID AND JONATHAN
On their last time together, Jonathan found David hiding from his father Saul. Jonathan came to David at the time of his greatest need to encourage his friend. “Then Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God.” (1 Samuel 23:16)
God has appointed Christian friends to help us through hard times so that we can endure to the end. The only way a brother or sister in Christ can truly help you is to teach you to depend not upon your friendship but upon the resources of God.
We strengthen each other in the Lord by reminding one other of the promises of God. “And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Even my father Saul knows that.” (1 Samuel 23:16)
So Jonathan strengthened David in the Lord by reminding him that God’s word is always true and that God would surely bring His promises to fulfillment.
We must be continually focused on pointing to God as the source of all strength. Our friendship must be a friendship centered around Jesus. We should exist to strengthen each other’s hand in the Lord and not in the strength of man.
The friendship of David and Jonathan is a powerful witness of what a friendship centered around God can be.
