DAVID’S ANNOINTING

Often we find ourselves choosing the good-looking or charismatic person for a role of leadership, not the least-likely candidate. Samuel learned that God is looking for the man or woman whose heart wholly seeks after the Lord.

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

~1 Samuel 16:7

Saul was the leader that the people would have chosen. However, he failed because his heart was far from the Lord.

Our God is one who seeks to bring up the humble from lowly places. He looks for those who are lowly in the eyes of the world and lets His favor flow through those who possess little except the favor of the Lord.

For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty…

~1 Corinthians 1:26-27

Throughout the Scriptures, God works His purposes through the most unlikely leaders. When God chose a leader, he or she was empowered to accomplish the task that God called them to do. In David’s case, it was being the leader of His special people. God will also provide for us the resources we need to accomplish any task that He sets before us to do.
