LAST WORDS OF DAVID
So David rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David.
~1 Kings 2:10
And so the life of David was nearly over. He was about to inherit his salvation. He was going to see his first son that he had conceived with Bathsheba. He would finally find peace from all of the strivings of being a king, a father and a warrior.
In 2 Samuel 23, David recalls the worthy men who fought with him. Their valor and their commitment to their king had enabled David to ascend to the throne and unite Judah with Israel. It is particularly noteworthy to see the last name mentioned in this list.
Uriah the Hittite was murdered by David, so that David could cover up the pregnancy of Bathsheba. David must have found it impossible to forget his great sins.
We have all had our moments with sins that have profoundly altered the course of our lives. But God wants us to move forward and not look back. He wants us to be more than conquerors: Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
The Holy Spirit’s encouragement to the Philippians through Paul’s letter has a similar message:
“...forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
~Philippians 3:13
As you reflect on your own life, with the many highs and lows, this might be a great time like David to be reminded of the mighty men and women that have stood by you. Who has encouraged you to press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus? Maybe give them a call or write them a letter, and give thanks to God for those He has put around you.
